An intro to Kanban

Kanbans are widely used in a professional setting because of their simplicity, flexibility and effectiveness. As it happens, they are also a great way to manage your own tasks.

What is Kanban?

If you're not familiar with the word "Kanban", it might sound more complex than it is. A Kanban is a visual way to manage your tasks: a board with columns (buckets) for each stage of your task. You can add cards to the board, and move them around as you work on them to track your progress.

A simple and effective setup is a board with three buckets:

  • To Do
  • In Progress
  • Done

The benefits of Kanban

  • Visualization: Kanban provides a clear visual representation of your tasks, making it easier to see what you need to work on.
  • Simplicity: Kanban is simple to understand and implement. You don't get stuck in learning the tool.
  • Flexibility: You can customize the board to fit your specific needs, adding or removing columns as needed.
  • Increased productivity: By breaking down tasks into smaller, manageable steps, Kanban can help you stay focused and increase your productivity.
  • Improved communication: Kanban can help you communicate your tasks and progress to others, making it easier to collaborate and get things done.

How to get started

  1. In Pursu, you can create a new goal and let Pursu generate tasks for you.
  2. Find the "To Do" bucket in the tasks section of the dashboard.
  3. Add any other cards you want to work on.
  4. Move cards around as you work on them and see your "Done" bucket grow.

Best practice guidelines

  • Limit your work in progress to avoid context switching and focus on one task at a time.
  • Use the concept of feedback loops. On a frequent basis review your board and identify what has gone well, what went wrong, and what you can improve.
  • Start small and simple.
